Cholesterol is a lipid chemical (lipid) that is made in the cells of your body. Many different cells produce cholesterol, but liver cells make up about a quarter of the total. You need cholesterol to stay healthy.
Cholesterol is transported in the blood by particles called lipoproteins. When low density lipoproteins (LDL cholesterol) contain cholesterol, it is called "bad" cholesterol. Higher levels of LDL cholesterol in the blood lead to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
However, some cholesterol in your blood is carried by high density lipoproteins (HDL cholesterol). HDL cholesterol can be considered a "good" cholesterol and higher levels help prevent cardiovascular disease.
Other factors can reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease: do not smoke, choose healthy foods, consume little salt, exercise regularly, keep your weight and waist, and drink alcohol in moderation or not at all. Ensuring that your blood pressure level is not increased (or taking medication to lower it if it is elevated) is also important.
